The blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions.

Hockey pucks and tennis balls

Apparently, there were plenty of Capital District Plattsburgh State alumni who missed their hockey team as much as I did.

More than half of the approximately 400 fans that were at Weibel Avenue Arena in Saratoga Springs for Tuesday's Plattsburgh State-Skidmore game were wearing Cardinals jerseys, sweatshirts and caps. Ican almost imagine what the players from both teams were thinking: Plattsburgh State players "Wow, this was more than we expected.

It's almost like a home game."

Where the Bison are always Blue

In the spirit of this week's column, it's time to have some fun with high school team nicknames. This first idea is sung to the tune of "Home on the Range:"

Oh give me a home where the Blue Bison roam
And the Frogs and the Firebirds play
Where seldom is heard a Marshall Jurist's word
And the fields are filled with Violets all day
