![]() Sports ScrapsThe blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions. Aug 05 From this week's paperrjonas, Sports Scraps
I feel so strongly about this subject that I'm taking my column from the Aug. 5-6 editions of Spotlight Newspapers and putting it on my blog...

Jul 22 Blame it on the rainrjonas, Sports Scraps
There's only eight days left in the New York Collegiate Baseball League season, and the East Division teams are scrambling to make up for lost time -- thanks to Mother Nature. Due to all the rain of the past seven weeks, teams like the Albany Dutchmen, Saratoga Phillies and Glens Falls Golden Eagles have to cram as many games in as possible to make up for the rainouts (the Dutchmen lost eight games to rain as of Monday).
The one thing that can't be made up is all the revenue lost due to the rainouts. Not that NYCBL teams make a ton of money on game day, but losing home games due to the weather does hurt in the financial column... Continue Reading CATEGORY: Baseball
Mar 04 Manny being Mannyrjonas, Sports Scraps
After hearing today that Manny Ramirez signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 2 years/$45 million to end months of negotiations (or the lack thereof), I thought, "Wasn't that what the Dodgers kept offering him over and over again?" So, I came up with a short skit about Manny's spectacular negotiating strategy.
[Scene starts in office at Dodgers Stadium] Dodgers GM: Manny, we're prepared to give you $45 million over the next two years to stay here in sunny L.A. What do you think? Manny: The contract's not long enough for Manny... Continue Reading CATEGORY: Baseball
Feb 19 Holy ...rjonas, Sports Scraps
For all of you up in arms over the fact that Albany Academy is the No. 2 seed out of the Suburban Council for the Section II, Class AA boys basketball playoffs, may I present to you a team that was more disrespected by the Section II committee than the Cadets.
I am referring to the undefeated Holy Names girls basketball team -- your No. 3 seed in Class A. Yeah, you read right. An undefeated team seeded No. 3. Not No. 1. Not No. 2. No. 3, people. So, who did the Section II girls basketball committee think deserved to be seeded higher than Holy Names? No. 1 Mohonasen and No. 2 Averill Park. To be honest, I can understand why Mohonasen received the top seed... Continue Reading CATEGORY: Basketball
Feb 10 In case anyone was wondering ...rjonas, Sports Scraps
Yes, I saw Alex Rodriguez's admission of taking steroids on ESPN Monday night ... and Tuesday morning. It was kind of hard to avoid, since SportsCenter ran it so frequently. Then again, given what A-Rod was admitting to (three years of steroid use while in Texas) and given A-Rod's place in baseball (possibly the most recognizable player in the major leagues today), I'm surprised ESPN didn't run it on a continuous loop so fans could dissect his every eye twitch.
The fact that A-Rod took steroids for three years doesn't surprise me. Since it was an accepted practice in baseball for approximately 15 years, I'd be more surprised if he didn't use steroids... Continue Reading CATEGORY: Baseball
Feb 06 Pull the plug on the CBA -- permanentlyrjonas, Sports Scraps
So, the Continental Basketball Association has decided to end its 2008-09 season early. Smart move.
Too bad there had to be a 2008-09 season to begin with. In its infinite wisdom, the league decided to carry on with only four active franchises this year. That's right -- a four-team league. Usually if a league is down to four teams, it looks to expand, merge or disband before scheduling another season. Not the CBA, though. It carried on with its four teams. Not only did it decide to carry on with four teams, but it carried on with four teams separated by hundreds of miles. To compensate for the distance, the league scheduled four-game series between the teams so they didn't have to travel to any one city more than once... Continue Reading CATEGORY: Basketball
Jan 14 Suburban Council hoop notesrjonas, Sports Scraps
Some quick observations from the world of Suburban Council basketball:
• Another year, another injury for Saratoga's Jordan Stevens. This time, it's a sprained ankle that's keeping him out of the lineup. If not for the multitude of injuries Stevens has suffered during his varsity career, he'd be well over 1,500 points. That's how good he's been when he's been healthy. • Shaker suffered its fifth loss by two or fewer points Tuesday night against Bethlehem. Fate has been rather cruel to the Blue Bison, don't you think? • I don't expect Mohonasen to win the South Division title, but it would be nice to see it happen...
