Dec 04 Come see MacbethPosted by kmccarthy | 12/04/08
If you ever wonder if you’re getting your money’s worth in our school district, come see Theatre Without a Net perform Macbeth at the high school this weekend. You’ll be impressed and you’ll be glad you’re part of a community that can do something this great. If you’ve never seen Shakespeare before, this is one of his shortest. If you’re a fan of the consequences of power run amok, this is your show. If you’re a fan of sword fights, this is for you. It’s hard to imagine who this show isn’t for! So do yourself a favor and come on over to the high school to catch this classic.

Nov 24 Way to go, HannafordPosted by kmccarthy | 11/24/08
Hannaford has done a cool thing - they put a bunch of food in box, called it "Fund a Feast" and for $10, we can all do a good deed.
The donation goes to the Bethlehem Food Pantry, something I only recently learned existed. We all keep hearing about these tough economic times, and I was happy to do a little something for somebody, somewhere. Thanks, Hannaford, for making that possible... CATEGORY: General Society
Nov 04 VotePosted by kmccarthy | 11/04/08
That felt good.
With the flip of a few switches, I voted in the most historic election of my lifetime. And for a few minutes, I felt important and part of something so much bigger than my regular life. It’s great to vote in Bethlehem; the poll watchers greet you, there’s the man who collars you to explain the proposition, and there’s always a friend to chat with. At 8 this morning, things were moving quickly at the school district office, and all the people working the polls were noticeably pumped. “One hundred and fifty people so far,” two of them said. “Are you going to vote with your dad?” another asked a man with his two little kids. “Don’t tell anybody who you vote for... Oct 06 A passing leaf showerPosted by kmccarthy | 10/06/08
We are great fans of crisp weather in our family. Autumn is invigorating, and when we got up one morning last week and saw that the temperature in the house was 58 degrees, we agreed it was time to take out the air conditioners.
But it’ll be a while before storm windows go in. That’s always a weekend chore combined with leaf raking, round one. That weekend looks to be a few weeks away, judging by the maple in our side yard that looks like it dipped the tips of its leaves in a can of red paint. While we wait for the leaves to fall, we settle into our autumn routine. We’re used to the school start now, getting up early and packing up lunches is the way we start the day, and we’re slowly getting used to life with one child away at college... Sep 15 Looking forward to a smoother ridePosted by kmccarthy | 09/15/08
It’s rare that weekends come close to perfect, but this was one.
I should have cleaned the house; if you came to visit, I’d talk to you on the front porch and not let you into our chaotic inner sanctum. Fortunately, my husband suggested a bike ride, both days, and we forsook home chores for quality time. That’s the story I’m going to tell you if you come by my house, at any rate! There are a lot of cyclists out there, on their sleek bikes and in their colorful clothes. Maybe next year, I say, but for now, we pedal along on our clunky old bikes with saddlebags, dressed in cotton shorts and T-shirts. Hey, we’re happy, and spent a couple of hours each day doing our hearts and muscles a little good... CATEGORY: General Society
Sep 08 Matters of the HeartPosted by kmccarthy | 09/08/08
In my job, we stress repeatedly that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in America.
In the past few weeks, I’ve been awed by all that my heart has done, and at all it can withstand. Emotions always hit my heart hard … in good times and bad. In mid-August, I left on vacation. My heart soared in anticipation of joining my family, who had gone on ahead of me. Kind of like a giddy teenager, it beat fast when my husband met me at the Cork Airport in Ireland. It swelled with love when I wrapped my arms around my teenage sons later that day. A few days later, it felt like it stopped when I opened an e-mail to learn that Kim Schoening had died. My heart has been grieving since. Kim was a powerful, dynamic, faith-filled woman... CATEGORY: General Society
Jun 05 When is a party not a party?Posted by kmccarthy | 06/05/08
Ok, so three weeks from now, on Friday, June 27, members of Bethlehem's senior class become graduates. Caps, tassels, grandmothers, sandwiches in the backyard ...
and an all-night party for the whole class to enjoy. Which, like everything else in this economy, is hitting hard times. Lots of Bethlehem's business owners have contributed to the party - either cash or goods - and so have parents. Parents of seniors, parents of other high school students, parents of elementary school kids. And if a few more reach into their pockets and send along a contribution, this year's class will have as good a party as other classes have... CATEGORY: General Society
