There was a time I didn't care about food costs. Two great incomes, no children, so what if I ate TV dinners.
Not so now. I'm a stay-at-home mother with a son, Marcus (almost 4), and a daughter, Lauren (2.5). I'm fortunate I can stay home but only through making personal sacrifices like putting my career on hold.
We have a stretched household budget with little money for extras a second income can buy.
So goodbye to regular meals out. Farewell flowers and expensive gifts. Forget about going to concerts and the theater.
We make compromises -- we share one cell phone and go to the movies two or three times a year.
We don't have extended family in the States to help us...
