My friends appreciate my food, but cooking didn’t come naturally to me, even though I grew up helping out in our family restaurant in England and watching my father cook. I confess I took my father’s cooking for granted when I lived at home.
Moving to the Capital District and having a family forced me to cook. Before that, I lived in London and was definitely “Girl about Town.” I’d go straight from work to meet friends to eat at one of the thousands of restaurants in London and hardly ever saw my kitchen! Lessons from My Parents: I forgot the hard lessons of youth. My parents immigrated to Britain from Hong Kong in the early 1960s with nothing, but the suitcases they carried...

Here we are at the end of February and for the last few weeks I’ve been reflecting on the subject of love, prompted by an email from a good friend, who suggested I ask people, who may be of different cultures, ancestry, faiths and interests, where they see their common ground. Is the common ground being united by country or allegiance, so you’re American, British, Chinese, European, etc.? Or is it family, community, faith or even food?
Universal Love: As the question goes around and around in my head, the thing that keeps on coming back to me is that “universal love” is the common ground. Let me explain what I mean. For me, February has been focused on universal love and not romantic love, although appropriately we have marked Valentine’s Day... CATEGORY: Commentary & Debate

Coffee MatesSUSAN S. CHEUNG (known to many as Shifay--Chinese middle name.) Welcome to my world. I'm a resident from across the pond who lives in the Capital District. For 13 years, I was all about my career and being successful. Becoming a mother twice in my mid- to late-30s made me take stock. Now my life is a hectic whirl of being a stay-at-home mom of two young children. I face the challenges of being a woman, an older mother, a non-American and a short person! Fortunately, I'm rescued from making too many faux pas by my coffee group (my mates)-- a great bunch of women in different situations of life. We meet in the guise of drinking coffee, but really it's about keeping our sanity intact. My blog is my take on the daily issues that affect us.
